Dubravka Zima on Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić’s Fairy Tales at an International Conference in Rome

Prof. Dubravka Zima participated in the international conference Fairy Tales in Slavic Countries: Reception – Production – Circulation, held from 11 to 13 February 2026 at Sapienza University of Rome.

The conference brought together around 100 international researchers who examined the origins, reception, transformations, and circulation of fairy tales in Slavic cultures from interdisciplinary and comparative perspectives. The conference aimed to explore how fairy tales in Slavic cultures emerged, circulated, and evolved – from oral tradition and literature to film, theatre, illustration, and contemporary digital media.

In her presentation, Slavic, Pan-Slavic, Pre-Christian Slavic: On Imagining of the Slavic Identity in the Fairy Tales of Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić, Dubravka Zima explored the ways in which Slavic identity is constructed in the fairy tales of Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić, with particular emphasis on Slavic, Pan-Slavic, and pre-Christian Slavic imaginaries.

Her participation in the conference contributes to the international dialogue on Slavic literary and cultural heritage and opens up space for studying fairy tales beyond exclusively folkloristic and national frameworks.
